Why Harvest?
In the fourth chapter of the gospel of John, in verse 35, "Jesus said: "Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest."
Harvesttime in the ancient world was a time of joy, just as there is also great joy when a sinner (the Bible informs us that we are ALL sinners) repents, meaning he confesses his sin, turns from it and puts his complete trust in Christ.
When Jesus speaks of the fields being white for harvest, He is comparing the field of ripe, white barley ready to be harvested with people in the world who do not yet know Him--people he wants to bring into His Kingdom.
Do we need more churches?
Throughout history, many have been called to faraway countries to proclaim and demonstrate the love of Jesus, yet in our own back yard today, the spiritual need has never been greater.
Sadly, North America is the only continent where Christianity is not growing. The decline began in earnest in the middle of the last century.
In 1900 there were 27 churches for every 10,000 Americans.
In 1950 there were 17 churches for every 10,000 Americans
In 1996 there were 11 churches for every 10,000 Americans.
This seems hard to believe in a time when saturation of Christian radio and television and access to Bibles and biblical teaching materials (printed or online) is at an alltime high.
In our country today, only 20 percent of Canadians regularly attend church and only seven percent of Canadians are connected with an evangelical Christian church.*
Where 13 percent of Canadians read their horoscope daily, only four percent read their Bible daily.*
Jesus said, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest." (Matt 9:37-38)
If the statistics are true---if we are in as dark a spiritual age as the surveys say, then it is evident that we do not need just another church. In reality, Fredericton could use dozens and dozens more vibrant, evangelical faith communities filled with labourers like you and me who want to help with the harvest to see our friends and neighbours lives transformed.
